In the last few years, AFCD has taken a number of active conservation measures to enhance the ecological diversity of the Country Parks.
In the aspect of fauna, AFCD has built many nesting boxes in several Country Parks for bird breeding. Result shown that over 20% of the nesting boxes were occupied. The department has also successfully raised species of ecological concern including the protected Birdwing butterfly. Besides, there are successful relocations of the endemic Romer's tree frogs and Hong Kong Paradise Fish.
For Plant, AFCD has used various methods to propagate rare and endangered plants, such as Keteleeia fortunei, Camellia crapnelliana and Camellia granthamiana, which were replanted in their potential natural habitats. Besides, more native tree species were employed during tree planting schemes to enhance biodiversity.
To push up sustainable development of Hong Kong and its education, AFCD has provided facilities, ranging from picnic through visitor centres with their educative displays, to interactive outdoor nature center. These help people appreciate and understand the ecology flora, fauna and rural heritage.
