The pond at the Lions Nature Education Centre is the first pond in Hong Kong constructed for dragonflies. With time and careful planning the pond is likely to support about a quarter of the 102 dragonfly species found in Hong Kong.

Dragonflies are extremely colourful insects with superb flying skill. The early stage of a dragonfly life is spent in water as a larva, many species prefer fast flowing streams but there are also great varieties which favour ponds. Many dragonflies drop their eggs on to the surface of the water but damselflies and many of the larger dragonflies require submerged and emergent plants which they use to insert their eggs for protection.

The pond has been designed to support and encourage the development of a diverse community of aquatic plants with many emergent reeds, irises, sedges and lilies and a variety of submerged pondweeds. As the plant community is established more and more species will make use of the pond. Many species will be attracted to the pond as soon as they are completed.
